Temporary Structures come in a large variety shapes and sizes, and are designed for many different purposes. There are also many definitions of what a temporary structure is, as McGraw-Hill, (in their Encyclopedia of Science and Technology) define it as "a structure erected to aid in the construction of a permanent project"
In fact,
temporary buildings can also be the end result of the project too. They can be a single structure, designed for a specific purpose, for just a specific period , and are a stand-alone project without having any other project being dependant upon them, permament or not.
When they have fulfilled the objective of the function they were planned for, they are relocated or maybe more usually, just dismantled into their component parts. The purpose is temporary, as are they.
Examples of this kind of temporary structure which you will all have seen are: marquees, fairground equipment, exhibition stands, concert stages, covered seating for sports events, Portakabin type buildings, large inflatable structures, temporary warehouses, workshops and industrial units, ice-rinks, kiosks, portable toilets, floating pontoons, etc.etc.
There ought to be far more
temporary structures of this type in existence at any moment in time, than there are of the type covered by McGraw-Hill's very narrow definition. For the rest of this article therefore, we will talk of temporary structures in all of their guises.
Individual Planning Departments also have their own unique criteria, and for some, if a structure exists for 28 days or less, then it is temporary, and therefore doesn't involve planning permission.
